Hiking Conditions:

Hiking in the Sierra!! - 05/4/08

It is may 1st in the Sierra which is definitely early for hiking in the backcountry. But
considering the time of year, things are melting out. Some of the areas we have checked out include: Laurel Canyon ( I know it’s a Jeep road but snow pack has stopped vehicles) that road is 90% clear to the 9700" level. McGee Canyon – snow free to Horsetail Falls and big patches of snow until about 1/4 – 1/2 mile to the first crossing. Solid snow beyond that. Convict Canyon – about 2 miles up near the meadow area before you hit too much snow but you can hike around the lake.Sherwin Lakes – slowly opening up but still large patches of snow in the trees.
And the Lakes basin – is still closed but you can hike over the snowpack over the road.
We are hoping to have a Tioga Pass opening for Memorial Weekend but no news yet. Feel free to give us a call for updates. T.K.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Spring Skiing!! Bike Shop open!! - 04/28/08

If you were not here this weekend – you defintely missed out!! The temparatures were warm, the wind had disappeared and spring condtions were excellent. The best time to ski is from around 10am until 2 pm and then plan a little early evening fishing or
mountain biking. Just when we think the warmth is here to stay …. a cold front will be moving in for the week with the normal wind event we have been used to all winter – a drop of around 25 degrees and then a warm up for the weekend.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Warming trend in the forecast!! - 04/9/08

with the last chance of a winter storm having passed our area, we are expecting a warm up in temparatures for the weekend – Expect spring like conditions developing in the ealry afternoons – best time to ski will be between 9-2 pm. If you get a chance read our blog – greg was up skiing and just updated it. Our employees are asking for ski breaks daily – the conditions are really good!! 8-10 feet of snow and still freezing at night. Hope to see you here.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Fair weekend ahead!! - 04/4/08

For those of you who have been thinking the season is over in Mammoth, think again!! All of our employees who have been up this week have all had some of the best skliing of the season. No crowds and with the mountain in full operation, expect winter conditions on the upper slopes and spring conditions- only in the parking lots by mid afternoon. The temparatures are supposed to warm for the weekend, and then cool off next week making it hard for any snow melt. It has still been freezing here at night so that combined with the elevation has really lengthened our season. Look for blog updates today from Greg whi is out skiing again this morning.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Beautiful weekend ahead!! - 03/21/08

The weather gods are smiling upon us this week – the wind has disappeared, the sun is out and we are anticipating a beautiful Easter weekend – Easter Sunday is always a great day to get up on the slopes – it is usually deserted because of all of the Easter activities so it is a great time to have the mountain all to yourself. The next hint of weather is just a minor disturbance mid week but we will get back to you when we know more. Otherwise, expect spring conditions on the east facing slopes and winter conditions higher up towards main lodge. We still have 9-12 feet of snow – no chance of a mountain bike ride for some time. Even Rock Creek canyon still has a lot of snow so winter is not over yet!! Happy Easter from us all…....

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

No one's here!!! - 03/13/08

Just got down from skiing – the best snow and conditions of the season and absolutely no one is in town. We can’t remember the last time the conditions were as good as they are and the runs deserted… Even if the weather is warming up where you are, do not count Mammoth out for the season. We anticipate the skiing to be good and the mountain to be open until at least Memorial day..This weekend, we are expecting a weak system to blow through with some wind and a few inches of snow, but nothing major. All of our ski clothing is on sale and boots and sk prices have been adjusted for the weekend. see you soon!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Clear skies ahead!! - 03/3/08

For those of you who had the opportunity to ski this weekend – the conditions were incredible. Yesterday had cold temparatures and the top closed down duer to 90 mph upslope winds but calm conditions overall. The mountain had a fine layer of wind buff overall and when the crowds left at noon – we had the mountain to ourselves. The weather man anticipates clear skis and warming temps until mid month so plan your trip to Mammoth now!! All of our boots and skis are on sale so there are some great deals to be had. if you haven;t tried our demo deprtment before – the Try Before You Buy program is the way to go..See you soon

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

6 Feet of new snow!!! - 02/25/08

As you can see by the new weather cam picture – the stormy period has left the building!! The top of the mountain received around 6 feet of snow and we are expecting the top to open up as soon as avalanche control has ended. Expect sunny, clear constions for the next week – Now is the time to plan your trip and check out some of the sale prices on this year’s equipment!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

3 Feet of snow and still counting!! - 02/24/08

We are almost through the last storm for a while – Today is a good day to stay indoors.. Not much of the mountain will be open today- due to the high winds and heavy snowfall. The highway is closed going north but fine going south. The worst of the storm is over and Monday is promising to be clear. We will keep you posted with any updates…

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Web Cam back and running - Clear weather after Monday - 02/22/08

As you can see, the webcam is up and running….We woke up this morning to about a foot of snow in town – very light and fluffy – and if you can make it up today, a real treat for powder skiers on the lower runs. We are expecting a little bit of clearing tonight and Saturday am but then be ready for a classic Mammoth dump .4-5 feet on the mountain on Saturday night and Sunday. Beyond that – 2 weeks of clear weather so do not despair if you miss the skking this weekend – we will have plenty more to come!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Stormy pattern in the forecast - 02/20/08

After some great skiing over the past few days and spring like conditions, we are rolling back into winter!! A series of storms is heading our way starting tonight with the potential of heavy snow on Sunday – the weather man is still unsure about amounts and timing- but come prepared for snowy conditions and a chance to try out those fat skiis!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Great weekend -Web Cam still down - 02/14/08

Although temparatures are frigid today with a cold east wind, they have promised us a warm up for the weekend. I would still plan for cool conditions and crowds. We suggest skiing early, taking an earlier lunch to beat the crowds or going over to June.We have put a lot of our skis and boots on sale – so it should be a good time to think about purchasing or using your demo credits before month’s end!! The web cam is down for the count and we have a new one coming next week. Look for some postings after the weekend with some pre season reviews on next years skis. Most of our employees had a good chance to demo them out last week for the Trade Fair.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Bluebird Days ahead......... - 02/7/08

As soon as our webcam gets up and running, you will be able to see for yourself – Mammoth is back to what we are famous for – tons of snow, groomed runs, no mid week lift lines and warm sunny days. The weather outlook is for the same for the next 10 days so plan your trip now!! Next week is when we get to try out all of the new equipment for next year at the dealer Trade Fair at Chair 2 so we will keep you updated on products to look out for… In the meantime – just come up and ski or ride and enjoy yourself!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Blizzard conditions today!! - 02/3/08

Well, as expected the storm rolled in last night and has pretty much shut the town down today. We just looked up Mammoth Mtns wind speed – and wind gusts of between 70-134mph have been reported. All roads are shut down in aqnd out of Mammoth…we are anticipating this will change as the day goes on. The mountain is on weather hold right now. It is a great day to stay indoors to watch the Super Bowl.
But look for clearing conditions and sunshine for the next 10 days. The storm cycle is finally over.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Great Skiing for tomorrow - 02/1/08

After a couple of horrendous days with winds and road closures the weather has finally cleared…Skiing should be great tomorrow until the next storm rolls in…We are looking for the last one in the series with the wind and possible road closures on Saturday night – but it is supposed to clear on Sunday morning – try and catch some fresh tracks before the Super Bowl..Hoping for sun and no wind!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Web Cam... - 01/30/08

All is not as it seems – our web cam seems to have frozen in time- but rest assured the weather is indeed clearing and the winds are finally dying down. The highway
was closed last night cutting a lot of people off from their families in Crowley and Bishop., The winds were incredible and made visiblility next to zero. We are still in an unsettled weather pattern through the week. For a more detailed report, click on Howards weather link on the left hand side, then Dweeb report. We will keep you posted!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Bring out your snorkels!! More snow on the way!!! - 01/24/08

We are in for a week long snow storm according to our local weather man!! We received about 8 inches at the store yeasterday at the 7800 foot level and much more on the mountain. The air is cold, the snow is very light and we can expect waist deep powder skiing here over the next few days. We are still trying to get the Freeride world Tour off the ground today over by Hemlock’s – but we are on weather hold this morning. We will keep you posted…

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! - 01/16/08

Lots of cold temparatures coming our way for the holiday weekend! Dress warmly on the hill and around town – although we are not expecting any precip, we will still feel the cold air. Snow conditions are great right now – both on Mammoth and June ( if it feels too crowded this weekend June is always a great option) Also tune into Channel 72 and catch some of the great skking and snowboarding footage from this weeks Freeride World Tour on the mountain. and mark your calendar for the finals next week on McGee mountain. The plan is to run helicopters to the top and drop off the remaining qualifiers – We plan to be htere with our lawn chairs and binoculars.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Night of Lights!! - 01/10/08

After a really mixed day here in town – sun in the morning, a warm up and rain midday, the skies are supposed to clear for the weekend. I would defintely plan on coming up this weekend – expect a fair amount of crowds now that the snow has finally arrived and the sun is out. A lot of people left early last week because of the storm and an anxiuos to make up for lost time. Footloose, Wave Rave and Mammoth Mtn are hosting the World Freeride Tour – riders that have pre-qualified can pick up their registration packets at Footloose starting Sunday at noon until 10 pm. Anyone interested in watching the event should show up at Chair 14 by 10am. You can wathc the show form the sundeck, listen to some great music and wathc some world class skiers and riders. Also, don’t forget the return of the Night of Lights at Cnayon Lodge on Saturday night at 5pm. This event has been sorely missed in Mammoth over the last few years and we are stoked to see it return.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Still Snowing!! - 01/8/08

After a bluebird day yesterday, another storm is rolling in the Wednesday. conditions in town and on the mountain right now are blustery, cold and snowy. But this does appear to be the last in the series of storms for a while. The snow is cold and dry – there will be some great face shots for those who plan early!! The weekend promises to be clear and sunny. See you on the slopes!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Storm is still rolling. - 01/5/08

I didn’t have a chance to get out today. Too busy digging my car out. I sounds like the mountain was good but terrain was limited.
The snow slowed down a bit then picked back up at the time of this writing. Looks like another cold, snowy cell is on tap for tonight then a slight let off on Monday. I can’t wait to ski the top! -silver

Great Skiing Ahead!!! - 01/3/08

It is official!! We are in for a major weather change with about 5-10 feet of snow and blizzard like conditions on Friday. We are advising that Friday should be a no travel day – stay home and safe!! But start packing to come up next week – the condtions will be awesome.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Storm of the Century???? - 12/31/07

The word is out – a MAJOR storm is headed our way on Thursday and expected to hammer the area for a five day period with the potential of 5-10 feet of snow!! As much as we hate to say it – we would suggest that you avoid travelling to and from Mammoth over the weekend – give us a chance to dig out and groom the slopes for the next week. You can always check our site for updates, our webcam for conditions or go to www.noaa.gov and type in 93546 for a zip code. This gets updated as conditions change. Once we get through the stormy period – we will have incredible skiing aond riding conditions through the next couple of months. We look forward to seeing you up here!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Storms on the horizon!!! - 12/29/07

It looks like we are in for a major weather change starting around the 4th of January. The pattern is beginning to change to a series of wet storms with the potential of a lot of snow – in the 4-5 feet range by the week’s end. If you are coming up for New Year’s, be prepared !! This sounds like the change we have waiting for. We will keep you posted!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Showery Forecast - 12/27/07

While we do not have any large storms on the horizon, the forecast is calling for unsettled weather through the weekend. A chance of snow but cold temparatures, so dress warmly and make sure you have face protection. Conditions are great right now – good coverage but surprisingly quiet on the hill …........

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

BlueBird Day!!! - 12/23/07

Just by looking at the web cam you can tell that today is one of the classic Mammoth
days – cold temparatures, bright blue skies, fresh snow and no crowds. If you can make it up this weekend, it should be spectacular!! If you are coming up for the week, we are expecting a small storm on Xmas Eve – otherwise relatively calm comditions.
See you on the hill!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Still snowing - 12/20/07

Woke up to another 6 inches covering the cars. After a cloudy day yesterday where the top still didn’t open, it stared to snow early last night. The brunt of the storm appears to be headed for us later today and into the evening. The top will remain closed for at least another day. Great for snow accumulation. Bad for getting rad on your sticks. I have a feeling tomorrow will be the day. I would keep an eye out for the top to pop in the avo. (Thats afternoon in Australian) – silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Huge storm! - 12/19/07

Mammoth got hit and hit hard. Three feet is the official word. Locals think more like 4 feet on the upper mountain. Nobody knows yet because the mountain staff is still digging out. Wind and nasty weather will probably keep the top closed for one more day. Hopefully it’s not too nasty and cold for the ski patrol to get out and control the upper mountain. Stay tuned for more accurate reports. As of right now its a mad house up here. Grab the fatties and go. We’ll work it all out later. -silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Major weather change!! - 12/17/07

After a great weekend of skiing with clear skies, we are getting ready for our first major snowstorms of the season. According to our local weather guy,we are looking for a series of storms this week, with the potential of dropping 2-3 feet of snow over the mountain! June Mountain and Canyon Lodge openend over the weekend so we expect everything to be in full operation for the Xmas break – If you can sneak away during the week- you will miss the crowds and be in for some great face shots!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Day 4 of ski testing. - 12/13/07

I’ll admit it. I’m a little tired after our fourth day of ski testing. Making run after run down the perfect groomers can be a bit exhausting this early in the season. Up until 3 week ago my feet hadn’t seen a ski boot in months. Oh well I know you all feel for me but i’ll try to get a good hot tub session in tonight and be ready for tomorrows Atomic test. At least I can finally go fast off the top due to the outstanding grooming down Cornice bowl. There might be a bit of snow tomorrow otherwise the carts are still calling for a series of storms starting next week. Until then try to get your ski legs under you. It’s a bit of work making all those perfect carved turns. -silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Cold day with bonus powder. - 12/11/07

An unexpected weather cell dropped about 4-6 inches of blower pow last night leading to yet another early morning powder day. Although not as powdery as expected due to East Winds ripping some of the goods into Reds Meadows, there were definitely some pockets of cold smoke to hit. Cold being the operative word. Temperatures in the teens had the locals bundled up and sporting down all the way around. I know i’ll be ordering some insulated pants in the near future.

The skiing is great although the mountain is not quite covered enough to let you open it up at will. I get a little frustrated when it’s like this. The groomers are great but I’m ready lap the Paranoids. Hopefully the East Winds subside and the storms predicted for next week arrive unfettered. Regardless, the snow quality is superb and there is more than enough terrain open to make a trip worth while. We had the staff out testing K2 skis and no one hit a rock all day. -silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Beautiful Day. - 12/8/07

It sure was pretty today. We woke up to blue skis and about 3 feet of perfectly white snow drifting around on the upper mountain. There is a certain sublime light that casts deep cold shadows this time of year. I makes the mountain look contoured and ominous. We stared at that most of the day while we waited for the understaffed ski patrol to work their snow safety magic. Finally, around 12:15 the call came down and we loaded our cabin bound for the first real powder turns of the year. The snow was great, The run was long, and my desires were satisfied. I’t’s good right now. Way good. -silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Everybody take a deap breath...we have a winter. - 12/7/07

After careful snow examination this morning I have come to the conclusion that skiing powder is way fun. Thats right, POWDER! And lots of it. Approximately 3 feet on the upper mountain. Boy, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Book your Christmas vacation, wax your sticks, and call your ski partner because it appears that the storms are lining up for some holiday goodness. Buy the way, that loud whooshing sound you heard early in the morning, that was the collective sigh of relief from everybody in Mammoth. Snow equals happiness. – silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Big storm!!! - 12/6/07

Quick update…This storm came in strong around 10:30 this morning and is still unloading on Mammoth as of 10 p.m.. I’m guessing at least a foot has fallen on the upper mountain thus far. I’ll be out first thing tomorrow. Update to follow. -silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Top is open!... Snow on the way. - 12/4/07

First of all, I couldn’t believe how good the skiing off the top was yesterday. Super edge-able, chalky snow with plenty of coverage. I was having a blast bombing down the rollers created by the snowmaking guns. Unfortunately, they had to shut down the lifts early due to high winds. Thats OK though because high winds often times are a sign of approaching weather and thats exactly what we have in todays forecast. The local gurus got up early, rechecked the latest computer models, and came out in agreement. Storm on Thursday! Hold your breath, cross your fingers, do a dance, or burn some skis. Whatever your particular snow superstition of choice is I don’t care. I think its going to happen this time. – Silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

More lifts to open... - 11/29/07

We just got the word that Cornice and chair 2 are expected to open for the weekend. Temparatures are remaining cold and skiing and riding is really good!! Most of our employees got a chance to go up this week and had a blast!! Definitely worth the trip up – no crowds and great snow- apparently some of the best in the country..We will keep you updated on any weather changes as soon as we know.

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Surprisingly Good!! - 11/27/07

Kudo’s once again, to Clifford Mann and his snowmaking crew!! They have been able to make snow nightly which combined with relatively low midday temparatures, have left us with some great skiing. Now the crowds from Thanksgiving have gone, it is definitely worth the trip. We have a chance of some snow showers for the weekend so lets keep our fingers crossed for some more natural snow. December 4th, in the Alpenhof and in the Village, is a snow festival with movies, dj’s and food. Maybe this will be the snow dance we have been waiting for!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

More lifts opening today!! - 11/23/07

Finally temparatures have cooperated and snowmaking has been operating on a 24 hour basis. It still sounds breezy on the mountain with a high of 24 degrees expected, but the back side of Chari 3 has some great skiing and riding right now for those of you wanting to move beyong Broadway. The next hint of weather is supposed to arrive during the mddle of next week so we will keep you updated. I
Coming soon is a sign up to our mailing list which will keep you updated on any changes that we think you should know about. In the meantime, we continue to ski, ride our bikes and wait….

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

A chance of snow!!! - 11/19/07

Well, after another warm and beautiful weekend here at 8,000 feet , the weather is finally beginning to change and feel like winter is approaching. We are expecting a blast of cold air which will allow for some great snow making and then the possibility of snow on Thanksgiving night, Friday night and then again on Sunday night.
If you are coming up for the holiday, be prepared for changing weather conditions, cold temperatures, and a variety of activities. There will be skiing – more lifts expected by Friday, mountain biking, hiking, and a Xmas tree lighting at the Village with Santa . We will keep you updated!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Change in the forecast ???? - 11/16/07

Well.conditions have really improved this week despite the warmer temparatures!!
If Matt can go and spend 3 and a half hours up there, you know it must be good!!
Snowmaking crews have been working on the back side of Chair 3 in saddle bowl and in some of the higher elevations as temparatures allow. The good news is that temparatures are supposed to drop next week into the teens at night and highs of 40 during the day. That should allow for some significant snowmaking day and night and allow more chairs to open for Thanksgiving weekend!! The longer range forecast is looking for a significant weather change in the next couple of weeks. We will keep our fingers crossed and keep you updated. If you want to know more , click on Howard Scheckters weather report on the left hand side and then the Dweeb report for a detailed discussion. Think snow!!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Powder Day! - 11/12/07

Mammoth experienced it’s first powder day of the season today. All right…Calling it a pow day might be stretching it a bit. At this point we’ll take what we can get and what we got was about 4 to 6 inches of relatively wet snow. The first few runs on broadway were vaguely reminiscent of a powder day. People were all over the place on the barely covered of piste terrain. It was basically pent up powder mayhem.
The good news besides the obvious addition of a few inches to Broadway, is the upper mountain is looking distinctly white. As I said in my previous post we only need about a foot or so and the mountain will be ready to shred. Keep your eyes pealed for that season starter storm. I know it’s coming. I can feel it in my bones. -Silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Opening Day!!! - 11/9/07

“How was it?” Seams to be the question on everyones lips. Well… I would have to say surprisingly good. Check the pictures for yourself, but the amount of snow Mammoth Mountain made for opening day was truly amazing. Much more than I expected. I didn’t hit a rock all morning and by 3rd run it softened up enough to lay down some nice carves. Fun times. For the park crowd there were three rails set up on the side that you can get all jibby with. Over all a tremendous effort by the entire Mammoth staff. I recommend you support their hard work and take a day to slide around on the freshly blown snow. It’s not a bad way to spend the afternoon. Also, keep your eyes pealed for a potential storm this weekend. With a thin white layer already blanketing the upper mountain it won’t take much to get the top running. We just need a foot or so and the season will be in full swing. Cross your fingers. – Silver

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

IT'S ON!!! - 11/5/07

I just drove up to the Main Lodge and checked the snow making progress. It’s official! One glorious strip of 6 inch deep, white corduroy is on the ground! Everyone in town had serious doubts about this years opening, but once again the Mammoth Mountain snowmaking machine has made the miraculous happen. Those guys must be the best snowmakers in the country. I suggest you wax up the rock skis and get the heck up here if you’re jonesing for some carving or rail sliding action. I for one will be out there railing a few turns for the season opener. I know it’s not as much snow as we all hoped for but sometimes a little bit goes a long way. Ye Ha!

Skiing/Snowboarding Conditions:

Approaching one-week countdown... - 10/30/07

and it’s not cold enough for snowmaking.
Mammoth was in a lovely, but unseasonably warm pattern for the last week, with more variable weather finally moving in to the area yesterday. Today it has been off and on cloudy with occasional showers: Here at the Footloose Web Headquarters Compound it feels a little more like May than the end of October. A couple more small systems should pass through the area, and we will probably get a dusting out of the bargain- lets hope for cooler temps and snow soon.

That said, it’s Mammoth- one storm system can open the whole mountain at any time… the north-facing aspects are still holding snow from 2 weeks ago, and snowmaking just needs a few cold nights in a row to get us ripping the corduroy.

In the meantime Footloose is in full winter mode with all systems go- if you need new gear, boot work, ski repair, etc., stop by and we’ll get you sorted. There are always some stragglers, but at this point we have all of our new 07-08 skis, boots, bindings, and clothing in stock. Also, we’ve been using our new Wintersteiger automated grinder/edge tuning machine since last season- the techs have it dialed in and the machine turns out really sweet tunes…

The mountain biking has been stellar, especially with a little water on the dirt and cool nights- the trails are smooth and fast. With the warmer temps, some of the higher elevation riding is back in play- local ridiers have been hitting Sand Canyon, a sweet shuttle ride that drops from high in Upper Rock Creek Canyon to Swall Meadows or Paradise (and the Lower Creek Trail or Wagon Wheel trail).

Still time for a hike or two in the high Sierra- there’s snow at the highest elevations, but it’s thin. Tioga Pass is still open, but will close at the first real storm.

Biking Conditions:

Hold on to your hats - 10/17/07

It’s been mighty windy for the last couple of days here at the Footloose Conditions Center in beautiful downtown Mammoth- wind speeds at the top of Mammoth Mountain topped 108 mph last night, and just about anything not tied down has been blown to Nevada- that pesky fall raking just got a whole lot easier.

We’ve had a couple more little shots of snowfall, and the ski area has started snowmaking operations for the Nov 8 opener, but things are supposed to warm up as the system to our north that’s spinning out all the wind moves on. Expect Indian Summer weather in the Sierra to return for a bit before winter kicks in- high’s of 60’s in Mammoth, 80’s in Bishop/Owens Valley.
So, still time for some last minute hiking/biking/climbing before winter begins in earnest.
All the trails below the ski resort are ridable, including Mammoth Rock Trail, and the recent cold temps and showers have left the dirt in sweet shape. Rock Creek Trail is also prime right now with the aspens changing and warmer temps than here in Mammoth.

Footloose is ready for ski season: we’ve got just about all of our winter gear in stock- skis, boots, bindings, outerware, etc.

Biking Conditions:

Snow in Town - 10/8/07

Mammoth is looking a lot more wintry after the first real storm of the season dropped several inches in town and more on the hill. Not surprisingly, it’s warmed up again to superb Indian summer weather- the temps were around 60 in town today. But winter is on it’s way- we’ll have a couple more little systems moving through the area this week, and rumor has it that Mammoth Mountain will begin snowmaking this week.
The ski area opens for the winter on Nov 8th, and the local weatherman is claiming things are looking good for a real storm system before then…

In the meantime, we’re getting all the fall we can before winter hits- it’s time for those last minute hikes in the high country…
The winds preceding the storm this weekend stripped most of the higher elevation aspens- the color change is peaking between 8000’ and 6000’ now.

The snow in town is melting quickly, but anything shady or higher (ie most of Mammoth Mountain) is too snowy for mountain biking. Everything lower than town is dry.

Hiking Conditions:

Aspen Show and Fall Weather - 10/1/07

Summer has finally left the building and it really feels like fall here in the Eastern Sierra. We’ve been having generally sunny but unsettled weather with low-pressure systems to the north sending is breezy and cooler weather (but no snow since our first little dusting). We should remain in the spin-off zone for another week before transitioning to a warmer pattern for a bit. The local weatherman is hinting at a real storm after that, but it’s hype at this point.
What’s not hype is the long term forecast- with a La Nina pattern in place out in the Pacific, we’ve got a good chance for an early/ cold winter.
That feeling is certainly in the air- the bears are scrounging, locals are stacking firewood, and the aspens are really starting to go off. We’ll try to get a couple of photos up soon, but you’ll just have to take our word for now… but it’s one of the most beautiful times of year here. The big stands below the Sherwins here in Mammoth are fully yellow, and areas like Lake Sabrina, Lundy Canyon, Parker Lake, and McGee Canyon are really going off.

Just over a month until ski season…

First Snow! - 09/24/07

  • Don’t forget our Local’s Appreciation Sale- through the rest of September, flash your local ID special prices on everything in our bike shop. We’ve still got some great bikes, and plenty of clothes, helmets, parts, and accessories. **

A dusting on the ski hill and flakes in town as Mammoth got it’s first snow of the season on Saturday. With the first hard freeze last night, and a return to sunny weather incoming today, it’s the official beginning of indian summer for the high Sierra, and the start of the real countdown to skiing- November 8, if you’re wondering. The forecast for the rest of the week is sunny skies, with temps in the mid-60’s during the day, and 30’s at night.

In the meantime, the mountain biking just got an extra dose of smooth-trail love from the moisture- and chilly nights should keep the dirt packed and smooth, especially on the higher-elevation and/or shady trails. Lifts or no, the trails on Mammoth Mountain and around town should be blast for the next couple of weeks. We especially recommend the Sand Canyon shuttle that drops from upper Rock Creek Canyon down to Paradise outside Bishop.

And while cold night and mornings mean more layers, the high country should stay in business for hiking and backpacking for at least a couple more weeks… get it while you can.
If you’re wondering about the aspens, the colors are just starting here in Mammoth (especially noticeable ont he Sherwins), but it’s really starting to turn on at the higher elevations. Lake Sabrina could be the best bet right now…

Fall Weather, Local Appreciation, New Ski Reviews - 09/17/07

Mammoth Mountain is shutting down the bike park on the 23rd- but it’s just the beginning of Mtn Bike Season #2 here in Mammoth.
Footloose is celebrating with our Local Appreciation Sale all month- we’ll be hooking up Mammothites with deals on everything in the bike shop. Flash your local ID and you’re in. We’ve still got some sweet bikes in stock as well as helmets, shoes, gloves, pads, parts, and clothes.

Sunny skies, cool nights, and temps in the 60-70’s in Mammoth for the last few days- it’s been warm and beautiful, but there’s a definite crispness to the air as fall moves into the high country. It’s still shorts weather, but you have to bring an extra layer if you’re hiking or biking.
With all the prime spots empty, moderate temps, and no bugs, this is great time of year in the Sierra. Things could change (temporarily, at least) toward the end of the week as a small cold low moves through the area- we may see some snow on Saturday. It seems like we almost always get a high elevation duster around this time, followed by at least a month of Indian summer.
Locals will be taking advantage of the slack season down in the Devil’s Postpile area (the San Joaquin River Canyon is spectacular in the fall), not to mention Yosemite, Tuolumne, and popular summer trailheads like Bridgeport’s Twin Lakes or Big Pine Canyon.

You can still mountain bike on the ski area, and now it’s prime time for riding the lower-elevation trails that can be too hot mid-summer.
Sand Canyon with the aspens changing? Yes please. Speaking of which- looks like the aspen show should be starting in earnest in the next two weeks…

In ski news, we’ve got almost all of our ski reviews for the new 07/08 boards up in our product area, and we’ll have Corty’s boot reviews up over the next few days. We’ve got about 80 models this season, and there are quite a few all-new skis. We have dozens of employees out testing skis, and we use their feedback to cherry-pick the best models for our line.

The trend in the industry has been toward heavier skis, and integrated bindings- but our testers are leaning the other way. Almost all the high-scoring skis were more toward the lighter and softer end. As a result, we’re carrying more skis like the Atomic Nomads, Fischer Watea, and Armada El Rey, and we’ve tried to carry skis without integrated bindings whenever possible.
